Hello everyone! New students will be seeing this blog soon. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful. Here is a new topic, but of course you can send contributions to the older ones if you wish.
How much do you know about your own university? And about others? Go to http://dir.yahoo.com/Education/Higher_Education/Colleges_and_Universities/By_Region/Countries/ and find out about universities worldwide. Choose one or more universities and compare it/them to ours. How do they compare? Would you like your university to be different in any way? What would your ideal university be like? Mind you, to be fair, do not just look at the academic side: also compare fees!

After surfing some of the Universities'webpages and ours as well, I have come to the conclusion that every University is unique and different from others. I know that this conclusion may be seen as vague (not to say a plain argument)
In relation with the fees, I must say that it's very common to see abroad that there are few Public Univesities as ours. This constitutes an incredible advantage for some students who, by economical matters, would not be able to maintain their lifestyle and career if the University wasn't "for free". When I say "for free" I'm reinforcing the idea introduced before; students are building up their future profession and developing in their comming areas of concern, without having to pay a single fee, apart from those which constitute photocopies, books, dictionaries, etc.
In addition, apart from the benefits that our Univesity has, we, as well, must consider certain drawbacks. The neverending problems with timetables, cursadas, finals exams, institutional issues, just to mention some of them, have made in some part of our career our staying at the Univesity less enjoyable.
Comming back to what I said in the introduction and not to make this post any longer, each University has its pros and cons. Each of us must get acquainted with that in order to bring in the maximun profit from our Academic
I agree with you, Joey, about the possibility of studying because we don´t have to pay a fee. I also agree that we have problems of different kinds, what you mentioned and also the building itself. So I sometimes wonder: wouldn´t it be better if we all had better salaries, and therefore enough money to pay for a private university, one of those that are clean and not so complicated? But I also wonder if they´re better than the public university.
Taking into consideration your last statement Cecilia, I support your point entirely as matters of Public vs. Private education.
As far as I am concerned, there are several conceptions regarding this theme. First of all, some Public Universities are regarded to be "better" in the sense of academic development, degree of teaching, and level, just to mention some of them. Nevertheless, I consider Private Universities worth mentioning, even though some of them do not qualify as strong, well-developed, and market encouragers. I thoughtfully believe that the organization of its timetables, schedules, subjects, is a good point to highlight.
Both of them have pros and cons. People who study in Private Universities support them entirely for several reasons, some of them directly orientated to their organization, human relations, careers, etc. We, students from Public Universities, defend our institutions as well, despite the fact that we might experience some drawbacks in a harsh way, comparing us to the students whose fees are necessary for them to continue their studies.
Joey: I agree, some universities are good and others not so much, and there are public and private universities of both kinds. But in Argentina, because we support public universities with our taxes, I think we have the right to study in one, and it has to be good precisely because we have, we could say, "paid" for it. I mean, I´d be very happy to go to Oxford although you have to pay, but it´s not fair to have only private universities, because in that case,if you can´t pay, you can´t study.
Salomé said: Public Universities are great. Students at Private Universities pay for everything: They pay their attendance, they pay their final tests and so on. It is not only the problem if students can afford the courses.Money spoils the studies at Private Universities. Teachers are not ALLOWED TO BE FAIR WHEN ASSESING STUDENTS. What if a great percentege of students fail and they quit? Money interferes in marking exams. In our Public Universities we do not have that sort of drawbacks.
